Salt, grit, fertiliser, and moisture all leave residue behind. If that residue stays in the hopper, slider, aperture, impeller area, wheels, frame, or control system, it can affect flow, cause stiffness, accelerate corrosion, and make the spreader harder to calibrate next time.
Cleaning is not cosmetic. It protects the parts that make the spreader behave predictably.

Winter material is generally hard on spreaders.
Salt and ice melt products attract moisture. Salt crystals are abrasive. Frozen or damp material can pack around the slider and aperture. Residue can remain hidden around fasteners, the axle, wheel hubs, and the impeller
If left in place, winter residue can cause:
- corrosion on exposed metal parts;
- stiff or sticking control levers;
- poor slider movement;
- aperture leakage or incomplete closure;
- uneven material flow;
- inconsistent spread patterns;
- wheel or axle drag;
- calibration drift at the start of the next season.
A spreader that looks clean from above may still hold corrosive residue underneath.

After any use:
Empty it. Brush it. Rinse it when needed. Dry it fully. Check moving parts before storage.
After winter use:
Empty it. Rinse exposed salt residue thoroughly. Dry it fully. Inspect metal and moving parts. Lubricate or protect service points before storage.
Do not stop at rinsing. Rinsing without drying can leave moisture sitting on the machine and may still promote corrosion.

Use this after spreading dry seed, dry fertiliser, or other non-corrosive material.
1. Empty remaining material
Do not leave unused material in the hopper.
Return clean unused material to its container only if it has not been contaminated with moisture, dirt, debris, or another product. If the material is damp, mixed, or dirty, dispose of it according to the product instructions.
2. Brush the hopper
Use a soft brush to remove loose granules, dust, seed, fertiliser, or debris from:
- hopper corners;
- hopper outlet;
- slider area;
- aperture edge;
- flow path;
- impeller feed area.

Pay attention to the base of the hopper. Material left around the aperture can harden, absorb moisture, or affect the next application.
3. Check the slider and aperture
Remove loose material from around the slider and aperture.
The slider should sit flat and clear of trapped material. The aperture should open and close freely. If material is caught along the closing edge, remove it with a soft brush.
Do not scrape the slider or aperture with sharp metal tools.
4. Clean the impeller area
Brush material from the impeller and surrounding area.
Check for:
- stuck fertiliser;
- seed husks or chaff;
- salt residue.
The impeller needs to be clean to throw material consistently. Build-up here can change the spread pattern.
5. Wipe or rinse if needed
If brushing removes all residue, a dry clean may be enough after dry seed or dry non-corrosive material.
If residue remains, rinse affected areas with clean water. Use a controlled rinse, not high-pressure water forced into bearings, gearbox housing, and enclosed mechanisms.
6. Dry fully
Allow the spreader to dry before storage.
Open areas around the hopper, aperture, slider, impeller, wheel hubs, and frame should be visibly dry. If the spreader is stored wet, corrosion is more likely.

Fertiliser can be just as corrosive as salt and can alsol attract moisture, cake around the aperture, and leave residue that affects flow.
After fertiliser use
Watch for
- sticky residue at the hopper base;
- caking around the aperture;
- dust build-up in the slider area;
- fertiliser trapped around fasteners or frame joints;
- material left on the impeller.
Do not leave fertiliser in the hopper overnight, especially in damp conditions.

Seed is non corrosive , but some seed mixtures can contain dust, husks, coatings, chaff, or carrier material.
After seed use
Watch for
- coated seed residue;
- chaff or husk build-up;
- small seed lodged in slider gaps;
- any material left in the hopper.
Do not mix leftover seed with fertiliser or salt residue. Cross-contamination can make material unsuitable for reuse.

Use this after any winter use. Do not wait until the end of the season if the spreader has been exposed to salt or ice melt.
Salt residue left on the machine can continue attracting moisture even when the spreader is indoors.
1. Empty all remaining winter material
Empty the hopper completely.
Do not leave salt, ice melt, or grit in the hopper between jobs unless the spreader is being used again immediately and the storage conditions are dry and controlled.
Dispose of unused or contaminated material according to the product instructions and local requirements.
2. Remove loose grit and crystals first
Before rinsing, brush out loose material from:
- hopper;
- hopper outlet;
- slider area;
- aperture;
- flow path;
- impeller area;
- wheel hubs;
- axle area;
- frame ledges and fasteners.
Removing loose abrasive material before rinsing reduces the chance of dragging material across moving surfaces.
3. Rinse salt residue with fresh water
Rinse exposed salt residue thoroughly with fresh water.
Focus on:
- hopper interior;
- hopper base;
- slider;
- aperture and closure edge;
- underside of the hopper;
- impeller and impeller feed area;
- frame and fasteners;
- axle and wheel hubs;
- control lever area;
- gearbox area;
- cable entry points and exposed cable sections.
Use a gentle, controlled flow of water. Avoid forcing high-pressure water into bearings, or enclosed mechanisms.
4. Move the controls during cleaning only if they move freely
If the control lever moves smoothly, operate it gently while rinsing the aperture and slider area. This can help flush residue from moving contact points.
If the lever feels stiff, do not force it. Rinse visible residue, allow it to soak briefly if needed, brush accessible areas, and inspect before operating again.
5. Clean the impeller area carefully
Salt often collects around the impeller.
Check that:
- the impeller is clear of debris, salt crystals, and compacted residue;
- the impeller rotates freely;
- no visible cracking, wobble, or heavy wear is present.
A dirty or obstructed impeller can change the spread pattern even if the hopper looks clean.
6. Clean wheels, gearbox, axle, and frame contact points
Salt residue can accumulate around wheels, axle points, the gearbox, and frame joins.
Check:
- wheel hubs;
- axle ends;
- frame corners;
- fastener heads;
- brackets;
- any ledge where salty water can sit.
Remove compacted material and rinse exposed residue.
7. Dry fully
Drying is the step that protects the spreader after rinsing.
Do not put the spreader away wet.
8. Lubricate or protect service points
Only lubricate after salt debris and moisture have been removed.
Apply lubricant or protective treatment only to service points recommended in the model manual or maintenance guidance.
Do not over-lubricate the hopper, aperture, slider, or material-contact areas unless the product manual specifically says to do so. Excess lubricant can attract dust, fertiliser, or salt and may affect material flow.
Note: Areas where there are fasteners should be sprayed with a protective lubricant such as WD40

After the final winter use, carry out a more careful inspection before storage.
Hopper and outlet
Check for:
- material left in corners;
- caking around the hopper base;
- blocked outlet;
- residue around the aperture edge;
- visible cracks or distortion.
The hopper should be clean, dry, and free from material before storage.
Slider and aperture
Check that:
- the correct slider is fitted or stored with the spreader;
- the slider is clean and dry;
- the slider sits flat and is not cracked or distorted;
- the aperture opens and closes fully;
- the aperture closes to a complete seal;
- no grit or salt remains in the closure edge.
If the aperture does not close fully, do not store the spreader as “ready for next season.” Clean again and inspect for trapped material, wear, or damage.
Impeller
Check that:
- the impeller is clean;
- it rotates freely;
- it does not wobble;
- blades or throwing surfaces are not cracked, missing, heavily chipped, or uneven;
- no used materials are trapped nearby.
If the impeller is damaged, replace or escalate before the next season.
Control lever
Check that:
- the lever moves smoothly;
- the lever returns correctly;
- The aperture movement matches lever movement.
Do not force a stiff lever. If cleaning does not restore smooth operation, escalate.
Wheels and axle
Check that:
- wheels rotate freely;
- the spreader does not drag or pull to one side;
- no string, grass, grit, or compacted materials are wrapped around the axle;
- wheel hubs are clean and dry;
- tyres are in usable condition where fitted.
Wheel and axle issues can affect impeller speed, walking consistency, and spread pattern.
Frame and fasteners
Check:
- frame joints;
- brackets;
- fastener heads;
- exposed metal edges;
- areas where saltwater could sit or enter.
Look for early corrosion, loose fasteners, cracks, or deformation.

Normal signs may include:
- light scuffing on the hopper interior;
- minor surface marks on the frame;
- light cosmetic staining from fertiliser or salt;
- small scratches on plastic or metal contact areas;
- residue marks that clean off fully.
These do not usually affect spreading if the machine is clean, dry, and moving freely.

Stop and inspect further, replace parts, or contact support if you find:
- corrosion that flakes, pits, or weakens metal;
- lever stiffness that remains after cleaning;
- aperture that does not fully close;
- slider cracked, distorted, or not seating flat;

- wheel drag or axle binding;
- cracked hopper or frame;
Do not rely on calibration to correct these issues. Fix the mechanical or material-flow problem first.

- impeller area is clear;
- wheels and axle are clean and moving freely;
- frame and fasteners are dry;
- control lever moves smoothly;

- any damaged or worn parts have been noted for replacement.
Store the spreader in a dry, sheltered place. Do not store it with material in the hopper. Do not store it wet.

Do not add fresh material until the aperture opens and closes cleanly and the impeller area is clear.

Cleaning itself does not always require recalibration. But recalibration or a short calibration check is needed when cleaning has changed anything that affects flow.
Re-check calibration if:
- a blockage was removed;
- the slider was removed, refitted, or changed;
- the aperture had been sticking;
- the control lever was stiff;
- the impeller area was obstructed;
- material flow looked different before cleaning;
- the spreader has not been used since winter storage;
- you are changing from salt to fertiliser or seed.
Calibration is the final check after the spreader is clean, dry, mechanically sound, and flowing consistently.
