Fertilizer or Salt Spreader? Cutting Carbon Footprint Woe

How to Create Environmental Sustainability For Your Home & Garden Projects

It’s a tricky question to answer when you are looking to buy a fertilizer or salt spreader. Especially, if you are needing one piece of equipment to do two contrasting jobs.

Here at Cresco Spreaders, we set out from the start to engineer a spreader without compromise. And, with as small a carbon footprint as possible.

Whether that compromise is over:

  • What job – salt spreading or fertilizer spreading
  • Cost – having to buy 2 separate spreaders for specific work
  • Or environmental impact

By creating significant advancements in spreader design, Cresco Spreaders has been able to ring in the changes, allowing you real choice in your fertilizer and salt spreader purchasing.

Carbon Footprint Reduced at Source

We start our carbon footprint reduction right at the beginning. Traditionally, spreaders have been assembled and shipped from the place of manufacture. Indeed, Cresco Spreaders has changed all that.

By shipping the products in pieces, we have been able to cut a weighty amount of carbon footprint. Reducing the number of shipping containers from 18 to 6, yet freighting 5 times more fertilizer and salt spreaders each year, we are helping lower environmental impact.

According to Forbes.com, “Shipping accounts for up to 3% of global emissions and 10% of transport emissions equal to those in aviation.”

For us, another vital puzzle piece is having additional warehousing in India to support the global distribution of Cresco lawn and fertilizer spreaders. Serving Australia, Brazil and the United States of America, as well as Europe, we aim to continue reducing our carbon footprint.

Not only is it our concern with environmental aspects, assembling our spreaders, garden seeders and other equipment in the country of destination means we have a greater control over quality and end user experience. We want you to receive your spreader or seeder in perfect condition right out of the box.

Being able to work towards carbon neutrality makes sense.

Self Sustainable Business Energy

Biomass Boiler

Running a biomass boiler for the past 5 years helps lower our overall carbon footprint. Heating our business premises, and supplying hot water helps reduce carbon dioxide emissions from 13,500kg coal emissions to around 750kg.

Plus, a biomass boiler saves millions of tonnes of wood from going into landfill.

And it doesn’t stop there.

Solar Panel Electricity

One of the largest and most effective kinds of renewable energy is, of course, the solar panel. Turning the heat of the sun into electricity through the panels on our business roofs cuts out greenhouse gasses and pollution. Another great way in which we try to reduce our carbon footprint.

Over the past 8 years our electricity has been provided by solar, and we are keen to invest even more into this form of renewable energy in the years to come.

Rewilding for Drawing Carbon from the Atmosphere

We love where our headquarters are here in beautiful Leicestershire, United Kingdom. Actively maintaining our local environment is important to us. Each year we continue to manage the many established oak trees planted around the estate, and plant saplings to encourage wildlife.

Not only does protecting native woodland help to reduce carbon emissions, rewilding also helps:

  • Wildlife adapt to climate change
  • Reverses biodiversity loss, reversing loss of species
  • Supports rural and coastal communities
  • Improves our health and wellbeing

Through the products we manufacture and sell, we actively support local growing initiatives to increase food production whilst reducing food miles and carbon footprint.

So, How Does Choice Between a Fertilizer or Salt Spreader Help Carbon Footprint?

If you remember your earlier dilemma regarding choice of either a fertilizer/lawn spreader and having to purchase a separate salt spreader, we bring you the alternative.

By designing a spreader that can cope with the rigors of spreading lawn fertilizer in summer and ice melt salt in winter, you will be buying into a sustainable ideal. With unique technology incorporated into all of our spreaders, you will be able to spread a range of different sized granules using the Cresco Slide System.

As fertilizers come in all shapes, sizes and weights, they hit the impeller differently, causing more material to be distributed one side or the other. With uneven spread you will get a striped lawn, either under or over fertilized.

Using the Cresco summer slide plate you are able to make easy adjustments, with up to 20 different settings to accommodate any fertilizer. By allowing you to adjust the holes in the bottom of the hopper, you are able to spread multiple materials evenly.

Because of the range of settings, you will be able to seamlessly switch from summer fertilizing to winter de-icing of paths and sidewalks.

Accordingly, as a result of technological advances, Cresco have been able to combine 2 separate spreaders into one all inclusive high-quality broadcast spreader.

Simple Slide Plates, Quality Control of Fertilizer and Salts

So, how does it all benefit you, I hear you ask? Combined with our state-of-the-art calibration center, we have taken all the stress out of how best to use your spreader.

By being able to use a different slide plate for each season, you have complete control over the amount of fertilizer going through the hopper. Being able to select the correct setting for the fertilizer you’re using (based on information from our calibration center), you can be confident in a perfect spread on each application.

Salt comes with its own problems. It loves moisture, which makes it great at stopping freezing! However, if it goes into the hopper damp, it tends to clump together and it becomes almost impossible to spread. Especially through small holes designed for different materials.

By using the winter slide plate, you will be giving salt the best possible chance of an even spread. Utilizing the unique spider agitator in the hopper, your salt will slip through onto the impeller with ease, ensuring consistent distribution.

Cresco Spreaders reduce hassle, cost and carbon footprint.
